The following tinnitus therapies have been shown to be the most effective:

 Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

There are two components involved in tinnitus retraining therapy:    Directive Counseling and Low Level Sound Generators

Directive Counseling is a specialized educational program that provides intense counseling about the origin and impact of tinnitus on the ear, brain, and the coping mechanisms. The goal is to de-emphasize the tinnitus and create habituation and acceptance.

Low-level Sound Generators produce specific noises through hearing aid type devices at low enough frequencies so that the brain recognizes both the noise and tinnitus. This program is designed to trigger the brain into adjusting to a pattern that will de-emphasize the overriding sound of the tinnitus. This program can also be used in the desensitizing of those who are sensitive to certain sounds.

Acoustic Therapy

Acoustic therapy is the utilization of a specific external sound source that causes the inhibition or alteration of the tinnitus thereby relieving some of the annoying symptoms. There are six main components to this therapy:

Tinnitus Masker or Sound Generator. This is simply an electronic device that is held in a hearing aid case which emits a white noise.

Tinnitus Tool – This is made by combining a hearing aid and sound generator.

Hearing Aids: Since 90% of all people suffering from tinnitus have some degree of hearing loss, hearing aids are beneficial. Hearing aids help amplify speech and other environmental noises which trigger specific locations of the brain and ear that normally wouldn’t be able to perceive enough stimulation because of the loss of hearing associated with tinnitus.

Portable Sound Generators: You can find these in just about any electronics or department store.

Home Masking: Some people drown out the ringing with the use of television, CD players, or electric fans.

Unfortunately, some tinnitus sufferers find that masking noise may merely be a substitute of one annoying sound for another. It is thus better to try to relegate the annoyance of tinnitus to the background of one's consciousness through habituation or retraining methods.

Many people find that masking tinnitus only results in substituting one annoying sound for another.  For these people, it is probably better to try and deal with their issues on a deeper level.

Music Therapy

This is a form of tinnitus therapy that involves the use of music with deleted frequencies that match those of the patient’s ringing ears. Many people have reported a decrease in the loudness of their tinnitus after listening to their custom made music for one year.

Neuromonics Acoustic Desensitization Protocol

This is a combination of acoustic therapy and extensive counseling. It basically involves wearing a digital processor that is connected to earphones that emits pleasant music which is filtered according to the individual’s level of hearing. The counseling portion in combination with acoustic therapy provides support and education.  The main goal of this tinnitus therapy is to retrain the neural pathways thereby making tinnitus more manageable to the sufferer.

Counseling or Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

This type of therapy aims at helping people cope with the stress and anxiety associated with their tinnitus. Counseling in combination with some other form of tinnitus therapy is found to be the most effective approach.

Stress Management

Stress associated with tinnitus can be managed through relaxation, hypnosis, guided imagery, or any number of other techniques.

Remember that each person is unique and what works for one may not work for the other. Keep looking until you find the right tinnitus therapy for you. You can do it !!!!
